Geylang East Home For The Aged’s Senior Citizens Recreation Centre / Neighbourhood Centre

The Senior Citizens Recreation Centre was formed in 1986 under the management of the Geylang East Home For The Aged. The objective of the Centre is to provide a convenient place where the senior citizens in the community and the home residents can mingle around and take part in more meaningful activities organized by the Centre.

As years go on, the Centre has extended its community service to provide activities for all age groups such as play group classes, karaoke, choir group and folk dance courses for adults and senior citizens as well.
To reflect this change, the Senior Citizens Recreation Centre was renamed to “Neighbourhood Centre” in 1995.

With the approval from MCYS, it was converted to a Neighbourhood Link in April 2005.

Community Meals Programme

Needy residents continue to receive free meals from Monday to Saturday in our Centre.

Geylang East Befriender Service
The Geylang East Befriender Service was formed in 1992 under the auspices of the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS), Geylang East Home of the Aged and its Geylang East Senior Citizens Recreation Centre/ Neighbourhood Centre.

Volunteers i.e Befrienders conduct monthly visits to understand the needs of various families who have come under the notice of the MCYS. Besides needy cases referred to us by MCYS, volunteers also keep a lookout for senior citizens around the area who might be encountering difficulties but do not know who to turn to.

Other than providing free meals and provisions for day-to-day living, Befrienders also assist or give advice to resolve various problems faced by the Befriendees, e.g. arranging for donation of wheelchairs, accompanying a senior citizen to hospital for treatment of cancer, fumigation of beds after the discovery of bedbugs and negotiating with HDB to move a handicapped tenant to a unit with lift landing.

During visits to Befriendees, volunteers enquire about their general well being and lend a sympathetic ear to any problems that they might face. The cleanliness and hygiene of the flats are also observed. All these are then noted down in a file for systematic follow-up actions. Befriendees are also encouraged to drop by at the Neighbourhood Centre at any time to mingle around with the staff and residents or to take advantage of the facilities provided e.g. reading of newspapers.

The Befriender Service, with around 30 volunteers, currently takes care of 58 households.
